Phakama’s Young Creative, Ellis Lewis-Dragstra, was awarded our first ever Young Artist Bursary, creating The By Artist Gallery.

In 2017 we launched the Young Artist Bursary. Similar to the Artist Bursary, we offer our team of Young Creatives and Youth Board, all aged 16-25, the opportunity to apply for a smaller bursary of £1000. As well as the bursary they receive a mentor selected from the Associate Artist team to support them throughout the project.

The By Artist Gallery was our first Young Artist Bursary project which creates pop-up gallery spaces in which all art forms can come together in a celebration, to showcase new work between artists and the public.

Anyone can apply to be part of these exhibitions! From established artists to someone who’s never done anything within the arts world before. This was also a great opportunity for emerging artists to promote themselves for free.

The By Artist Gallery gave artists who aren’t fully confident in their work or are having trouble promoting themselves the opportunity to take part in a public showcase of their work and meet likeminded people.

In July-Aug 2017 13 talented young artists exhibited their work at the pop-up gallery space in Rich Mix. 69% had never exhibited their work outside of school or University before and many hadn’t considered themselves as artists before this exhibition.

Over 120 people attended the private view and approximately 550 visitors viewed the exhibition.

Ellis’s is keen to create more pop-ups and also works for commission, you can see more of his work here on his website or instagram.
