The Phakama Way was a month-long training course held in Pune, India and hosted by the Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai in January 2002. Artists from Prithvi joined the Robben Island Peace project and collaborated on other South African projects throughout 2002. As a result of their experiences they set up this course to help arts workers in breaking down some of the barriers between the different Indian Castes.
Over 30 community leaders, theatre makers, university lecturers and school teachers gathered to share ideas, exchange processes and develop a locally based methodology for implementing Phakama philosophies in India, with the guidance of experienced facilitators from South Africa and the UK.
This project culminated in a site-specific performance with young people from Mumbai.
